Make: Herend Porcelain Manufactory (Hungary)

Construction:Ā  Porcelain

Dimensions:Ā  2 1/4" Tall x 1 1/2" Diameter

Condition:Ā  Excellent pre-owned condition. No evident signs of use or wear. Please see photos.Ā 

Details:Ā  The perfect addition to a Herend collection, or any festive table. These small, egg-shaped shakers sit on porcelain screw-on bases that are also the stoppers.Ā  Each shaker is painted on one side with a pair of birds perched on twigs with a beaded necklace somewhere among the branches. The reverse sides are each decorated with a butterfly or other insect.Ā  Both shakers have one hole in the top, the salt shaker is also pierced on the reverse side with 9 holes in a diamond pattern. The bases have a narrow gold band near the bottom edge.Ā  Marked on bottom with Herend's blue mark, and hand-numbered 260/RO 136 and 250/RO 153.
There is a legend that a Rothschild Baroness lost her necklace, and believed it was stolen.Ā  Later, walking in her garden, she saw songbirds in a tree, and, hanging near them, her necklace.Ā  The owner of Herend heard this legend and, inspired by it, designed this pattern in its memory.Ā  The Rothschild family were delighted with the pattern, and ordered the collection in 1850.Ā  It was named "Rothschild Bird" (RO) in their honor.
